SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

El Amargal has been the scene of research and scientific activity for more than 30 years within the municipality of Nuquí and throughout the Gulf of Tribugá, Chocó, Colombian Pacific.

The main universities and scientific institutions in the country and abroad have participated in this exercise with multiple monitoring and information collection projects, some of these projects are still ongoing.

In this section you will find some of the current and past research carried out in El Amargal.

The ecotourism branch has emerged as a way to make the project sustainable over time.

EL AMARGAL BIOLOGICAL STATION

We offer accommodation for researchers, graduate students, and university student field trips. The guesthouse currently has beds for 10 people and a final capacity of approximately 30. A fully equipped kitchen is available for the exclusive use of researchers.

If the work exceeds the territorial limits of El Amargal Nature Reserve, the researchers are accompanied to request the necessary permit from the local community authorities.

PERMANENT PROJECTS IN
THE AMARGAL NATURE RESERVE

Zamia Obliqua Reserve and “Long-term monitoring program of the Zamia obliqua population in El Amargal Reserve”.

Since 2006, the Zamia obliqua population of El Amargal has been monitored annually. Information on survival, growth, and reproduction rates is used to create mathematical models of population dynamics. In addition, studies on functional traits and other aspects of the species' ecology have been conducted in the monitoring plot.
